New Orleans, LA — Authorities have identified Shamsud-din Bahar Jabbar, a 42-year-old former U.S. Army staff sergeant, as the driver involved in the New Year’s Day incident on Bourbon Street, which resulted in 15 fatalities and 35 injuries. The tragedy has left the nation in shock as investigators piece together details about Jabbar’s past.

Military Background and Local Ties

Jabbar served in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2015, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and later continued his military career in the Army Reserve until 2020. His roles included human resources and IT operations, where he managed technical systems and oversaw help desk operations. Jabbar earned multiple awards for good conduct, achievement, and completing parachute jump training.

In 2012, Jabbar was stationed at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty). Court documents from a divorce filing during this time listed his work address as Fort Bragg while residing in Fayetteville, NC. He lived in the Cumberland County area for several years before relocating out of state.

A photo shared on WatchOut Cumberland County shows Jabbar in uniform at Fort Bragg, reflecting his service at one of the world’s most recognized military bases. His honorable discharge and decorated service history stand in sharp contrast to the tragic actions authorities now allege, prompting local officials and residents to ask how such a path could unfold.

Investigation Findings

Evidence suggests that Jabbar may have been influenced by extremist ideologies. Items discovered in his vehicle, along with videos posted on social media, indicate potential ties to harmful organizations or overseas extremist groups. Authorities are continuing their analysis of the materials and investigating whether anyone else was involved in the planning or execution of the incident.

Community Impact

The revelations about Jabbar’s background and his connection to Fort Bragg have shaken the local community, as many who served alongside him express disbelief.

Condolences to the Victims

We extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this devastating event. The lives lost in this tragedy are mourned by the nation, and we remain hopeful for unity and healing as investigations continue.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist in bringing clarity to this tragic case.
