  • Higher Auto Insurance Requirements
  • Toll Price Increases
  • New Immigration Enforcement Rules

North Carolina has rolled out several significant law changes for 2025 that will affect taxes, education, auto insurance, tolls, and immigration enforcement. Here’s what you need to know:

Lower Income Taxes

  • Tax Rate Drop: The state income tax rate has decreased from 4.75% to 4.5%, putting more money back into the hands of residents.
  • Increased Standard Deductions:
    • $25,000 for married couples.
    • $19,125 for heads of households.
    • $12,750 for single filers.

➡️ What it means: Expect bigger paychecks and less tax liability this year!

Expanded Private School Vouchers

  • Opportunity Scholarships are now available to all families, regardless of income level.
  • No Income Limits or Waitlists: The program has expanded to provide $463 million in grants for private school tuition.

➡️ What it means: Families now have greater choice in education, with increased access to funding for private schooling.

Higher Auto Insurance Requirements

  • New Minimum Coverage Levels:
    • $50,000 per person for injuries.
    • $100,000 per accident for injuries.
    • $50,000 for property damage.

➡️ What it means: While premiums may increase, these new limits are designed to better cover rising costs for medical expenses and car repairs after an accident.

Toll Price Increases

  • Toll Rates: Prices are rising, but there are new ways to save:
    • NC Quick Pass Discounts: Discounts have increased from 35% to 50%.
    • Free Transponders: Available through February 2025.
    • New Account Setup: Minimum reduced to $10 (previously $20).

➡️ What it means: Toll users can reduce costs by using the NC Quick Pass program.

New Immigration Enforcement Rules

  • Sheriffs’ Responsibilities: Sheriffs in North Carolina are now required to:
    • Comply with ICE detainers.
    • Hold certain inmates for up to 48 hours for federal pickup.

➡️ What it means: Stronger enforcement measures are being implemented, with increased cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

These updates aim to balance fiscal benefits for residents while addressing public safety and infrastructure needs. Stay informed and prepared as these changes take effect in 2025!
