Hope Mills, NC – Drivers across Cumberland County should remain cautious as icy conditions continue to affect roadways following winter weather. While main roads have been treated and are mostly drivable, bridges and overpasses remain slick, and secondary roads still have patches of black ice. Conditions are expected to improve as temperatures rise after lunchtime.

Current road conditions

Local authorities report that major roads like Owen Drive, Cliffdale Road, and Honeycutt Road have been plowed and are passable, but drivers should still watch for icy spots near bridges. Murchison Road has been reported as slick with some vehicles sliding. Raeford Road is mostly drivable but becomes more hazardous near bridges. Robeson Street and Hope Mills Road are also mostly clear, with some slick spots remaining.

Highway and secondary road conditions

Drivers on major highways, including I-95 and the 295 Loop, should use extreme caution. The 295 Loop remains slick, particularly on exit ramps. I-95 near Exit 58 has been marked as dangerous. Highway 24/27 near Cameron remains icy and snowy, and Morganton Road is slushy and slick in several areas.

Skibo Road is slushy from the area near Sam’s Club at Highway 87 to Raeford Road. Legion Road and Highway 301 near Walmart locations remain slick. Several overpasses, including the ramp to Highway 87 South from Owen Drive and the McArthur Road overpass at 295, are still icy.

Neighborhood roads and rural areas

Many neighborhood roads and less-traveled routes remain hazardous. River Road, Beard Road, Fillyaw Road, and Clinton Road are icy. The Person Street Bridge is very slick, creating dangerous driving conditions. Rosehill Road, Maxwell Road in Stedman, and roads in the Vass/Lobelia area near Spring Lake and Moore County have icy patches, making travel risky.

Travel advisory

Residents are urged to drive slowly, increase following distances, and allow extra travel time. If travel is necessary, proceed with caution and be prepared for unexpected icy patches.

Icy weather tip

To prevent ice buildup on your windshield, lift your wipers when parking and cover the windshield overnight. A shower curtain secured in both front doors works well to keep ice from forming.
