On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, a major Verizon Wireless service outage disrupted phone calls, text messaging, and mobile data access across large portions of the United States. Reports indicate the outage began around midday and lasted several hours for many customers before gradual restoration began.

Outage tracking services recorded more than 175,000 user reports at the height of the disruption. Customers across the East Coast, Midwest, South, and West Coast were affected, including major metropolitan areas such as New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

In North Carolina, customers in multiple regions reported sudden service loss. From Asheville to Fayetteville, users stated their phones unexpectedly switched to “SOS” mode, preventing calls, texts, and data usage unless connected to Wi-Fi. Verizon store employees in several cities confirmed the outage was widespread. In Charlotte, customers also reported being unable to place calls or use mobile data without Wi-Fi connectivity.

Verizon acknowledged the outage and confirmed that engineering teams were actively working to restore service. The company did not immediately disclose the cause of the disruption or provide a specific timeline for full restoration while repairs were underway.

For many users, service began returning later in the afternoon, though intermittent connectivity issues continued into the evening in some areas.

Customers experiencing ongoing issues are encouraged to enable Wi-Fi calling when available or use alternative communication methods until service is fully stabilized.
