Cumberland County, NC — Cumberland County officials have announced that the Westover Recreation Center emergency shelter is closed as of Sunday, January 25, 2026. Officials say the closure is due to sufficient capacity at other available shelters in the county.

The following shelters remain open and operational:

The Salvation Army of the Sandhills Region (White Flag Shelter)
245 Alexander Street
Fayetteville, NC
Shelter Entry Information
• Bringing identification is encouraged for faster service but is not required
• Verification services will be conducted upon entry
• Individuals must pass a background check
• Sex offenders are not permitted
• A breathalyzer screening is required
• Mental stability screening is conducted
Transportation and Safety Information
Residents needing transportation to an open shelter may contact the Cumberland County Non-Emergency Line at 910-600-7299.
For emergencies, residents should call 911.
Additional Notes
• For safety reasons, families with children must provide their own car seats
• Transportation services may be suspended if road conditions worsen
