Stedman, NC — The death of Anthony Hobbs, a local man known for his “Jesus Loves You” mission, remains under investigation following a tragic hit-and-run incident on January 6, 2025. The incident occurred along Highway N.C. 24 near Downing Road and I-95, leaving the community and law enforcement searching for answers.

Fatal Hit-and-Run on N.C. 24

According to reports, Hobbs’ truck broke down near I-95 on the evening of January 6, prompting him to walk westbound along N.C. 24. Earlier that evening, Hobbs was involved in an altercation at a Circle K gas station in Stedman. Witnesses stated that Hobbs damaged another motorist’s vehicle during the confrontation. The altercation escalated, with the other motorist reportedly pursuing Hobbs and calling 911. In the recorded call, the man is heard saying, “I’m chasing him down the highway right now. I’m about to get him to pull over and beat his [expletive].”

Near sundown, Hobbs was struck by an unidentified vehicle while walking along N.C. 24. The driver fled the scene, leaving Hobbs on the roadway, where he was reportedly struck by at least one other vehicle. Although several drivers stopped and reported the incident, the driver of the first vehicle has not been identified or come forward, nor has the driver of the second vehicle.

Call for Witnesses

Authorities have not confirmed whether the altercation at the Circle K is directly linked to the fatal hit-and-run. Investigators continue to urge anyone with information regarding Hobbs’ movements, the altercation, or details about the vehicle involved to come forward.

To the individual who struck Hobbs, law enforcement and the community call on you to take responsibility. Accidents happen, but the right course of action is to cooperate with authorities. Accountability is crucial for justice and closure for those affected.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 919-323-1500 or provide tips anonymously through 910-483-8477.

Community Divided Amid Personal Struggles

Hobbs’ tragic death follows a difficult period in his life. In November 2024, he was arrested near Pembroke for an incident involving a lewd act, which garnered significant public attention after footage of the event circulated online. Hobbs addressed the incident in a Facebook live broadcast, further fueling controversy and leading to threats against him.

For nearly 20 years, Hobbs was known for his symbolic journey, carrying a large cross inscribed with the words “Jesus Loves You” along highways. His mission of spreading faith inspired many, though his recent challenges, including mental health struggles and homelessness, shaped public perceptions of him in complex ways.

Despite these controversies, Hobbs’ message of hope continues to resonate with those who knew him. His untimely death deserves answers and justice. The community is urged to assist in any way possible by providing information that could help investigators understand the circumstances of the collision and identify the responsible party.

Seeking Justice

The investigation remains active as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to Hobbs’ death. If you have any details about the incident or the vehicles involved, please contact law enforcement. Your information could make a significant difference in achieving justice for Anthony Hobbs.

Call for Witnesses

Authorities have yet to announce whether the events at the Circle K gas station were directly connected to the fatal hit-and-run. Investigators are urging anyone with information about Hobbs’ movements, the altercation, or the vehicle involved in the collision to come forward.

To the individual who struck Hobbs: authorities and the community implore you to take responsibility. Accidents happen, and the right thing to do is to come forward and cooperate with the investigation. Accountability is critical not only for justice but for closure for all involved.

Witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident are encouraged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 919-323-1500 or anonymously at 910-483-8477.

 Community Divided Amid Personal Struggles

Hobbs’ death comes after a downturn period in his life. In November 2024, he was arrested near Pembroke for a lewd act, a case that generated widespread controversy after a video of the incident circulated online. Hobbs addressed the matter publicly in a Facebook live video that many interpreted as his participation, further fueling public judgment and drawing threats against him.

For nearly two decades, Hobbs was known for walking highways with a large cross bearing the message, “Jesus Loves You.” His mission inspired many, but his recent challenges, including mental health struggles, brokenness, and loneliness, overshadowed his legacy for some. His final months appeared to reflect the burden of life on the streets and the toll of being both admired and criticized.

Despite these controversies, the message still resonates and Hobbs sudden demise still deserves justice. If you or someone witnesses the accident, have info on moments leading up to the tragic accident, or have clues of the vehicle(s) involved, please reach out to authorities.
