Cumberland County, NC — Cumberland County Animal Services has temporarily paused operations after several animals in the shelter were affected by a respiratory illness. The closure began on Saturday, January 16, and is expected to last approximately two weeks.
During this temporary period, animal intake and adoptions have been suspended. An off-site adoption event that had been scheduled for Saturday, January 17, at PetSmart was also canceled. In addition, volunteer activities and community outreach programs are on hold while staff focus on animal care and facility safety.
Animals already placed with foster families will continue to be cared for in those homes, with ongoing guidance and support provided by shelter staff. Emergency and public safety-related animal calls are still being addressed, though services are operating under modified protocols during the closure.
Shelter officials stated the temporary shutdown is a proactive measure that allows staff to concentrate on treatment, containment, and enhanced sanitation efforts to protect the health and well-being of the animals in their care.
Cumberland County Animal Services expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by staff members, volunteers, foster families, and community partners as the shelter works through this situation and prepares to safely resume normal operations.
