HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A recently renovated community basketball court at Hope Mills Municipal Park, unveiled only weeks ago through a major giveback event led by Fayetteville native VicBlends, was heavily damaged by an intentionally set fire late Tuesday night.

According to the Hope Mills Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:56 p.m. on January 13 after receiving reports of a fire on the basketball court. The Hope Mills Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the flames, but not before significant damage was done to the playing surface and surrounding area.

An investigation led by Detective Sergeant Mariscal determined that the fire was deliberately set. Surveillance footage from the park’s camera system captured the incident, allowing investigators to identify a suspect.

Police confirmed that a 16-year-old female from Hope Mills has been charged with felony burning of personal property valued at more than $1,000 in connection with the incident.

The damaged court had just been introduced to the community during a large Thanksgiving outreach event organized by VicBlends, a nationally known barber and motivational figure from Fayetteville. The event provided free haircuts, food, groceries, hygiene items, and holiday assistance to hundreds of local families. The refurbished basketball court was one of the most meaningful contributions, created as a lasting investment in youth development and neighborhood pride.

In the days following the fire, VicBlends addressed the situation publicly online, saying he was shocked that someone would damage something intended to help and inspire the community. He said he later learned that a young lady and her mother had been at the scene.

VicBlends explained that he took time to pray about the situation and ultimately chose to forgive those involved. He added that while the damage is disappointing, it is a problem that can be fixed with resources and effort. He described a true problem as one that cannot be repaired so easily. He vowed to restore the court to its original condition so it can continue serving as a safe space for young people to gather, grow, and pursue their dreams.

Town officials have not yet released an estimate on the total cost of repairs or a timeline for when the court will be fully restored. The criminal investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has drawn widespread reaction from residents across Hope Mills and Cumberland County, many expressing sadness and frustration over the destruction of a project meant to uplift the community.

Authorities are continuing to review evidence and gather additional information related to the case. Anyone with photos or information about the incident is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
