Cumberland County, NC — A fatal shooting involving off-duty law enforcement officers is under investigation following an incident in the Grays Creek area.

Deputies with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting in the 1600 block of Seattle Slew Lane, located near the Grays Creek school area off Celebration Drive. Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male on the front lawn suffering from gunshot wounds. Medical personnel responded, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials later identified the victim as Captain Adam Bean, Assistant Chief of Detectives with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities confirmed that Bean was off duty at the time of the incident.

Preliminary information indicates the shooting stemmed from a disturbance at the residence involving two off-duty law enforcement officers. Another off-duty officer was reportedly involved, though that individual has not been publicly identified.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots prior to the arrival of deputies. The residence was secured with crime scene tape as investigators processed the scene, and law enforcement remained in the area for several hours.

Due to the involvement of law enforcement personnel, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has assumed control of the case and is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officials have stated that the incident is not believed to be random and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. No additional official details have been released at this time.

Information provided by witnesses suggests the situation may involve a personal dispute connected to the residence; however, the exact sequence of events and the status of the individual responsible have not been confirmed by authorities.

Captain Adam Bean had served with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office since March 2006, marking approximately two decades of service.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation at (919) 662-4500 or submit tips anonymously at (910) 483-8477.
