Fayetteville, NC — A former Fayetteville postal worker has been sentenced to 44 months in federal prison after admitting to stealing U.S. Treasury checks intended for individuals and businesses. Zerion McNeill, 30, pleaded guilty to mail theft and conspiracy to commit bank fraud in connection with the scheme.

Details of the Crime

Between August 2021 and June 2022, McNeill stole 47 U.S. Treasury checks with a total value exceeding $750,000. Instead of delivering the checks to their rightful recipients, McNeill conspired to deposit them into unauthorized accounts, causing significant financial hardship to affected individuals and businesses.

Sentencing and Restitution

In addition to his prison sentence, McNeill has been ordered to:

  • Pay $769,000 in restitution to the victims.
  • Serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.

Federal prosecutors emphasized the severe consequences of McNeill’s actions, which disrupted critical financial services and eroded trust in the postal system.

Impact on the Community

Assistant U.S. Attorney William M. Gilmore highlighted the broader harm caused by McNeill’s actions, noting that the stolen funds were intended to support businesses and individuals during challenging times. The breach of public trust has been described as a significant violation, underscoring the critical role of postal workers in ensuring the secure delivery of sensitive documents.

Investigation and Legal Challenges

The case required an extensive investigation to uncover the conspiracy behind the thefts. Legal experts noted the complexity of proving intent in such cases, making the successful prosecution particularly notable.

Community Advisory

The U.S. Postal Service is urging the public to remain vigilant. If you experience delays or suspect mail fraud, report it immediately. Protecting sensitive documents and holding perpetrators accountable remain top priorities for the Postal Service.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust in public services and the impact of financial crimes on individuals and communities.
